Apple Built a Custom Camera to Capture the Speed of F1

Beyond co-producing and distributing F1 The Movie, Apple also helped push the limits of how racing can be filmed by developing a custom-built camera system just for this project.

Using a 48-megapixel sensor from the iPhone 15 and the powerful A17 Pro chip, the system runs on a special version of iOS and is operated via iPad through a USB-C connection. The compact rig was mounted beside the cockpit of a real Formula 1 car to capture ultra-high-speed, first-person footage with stunning realism. The result is a level of immersion rarely seen in cinema, tailored for the demands of a Hollywood blockbuster.

Real F1 Drivers Make On-Screen Appearances

One of the film’s most exciting Easter eggs for fans is the appearance of real-life Formula 1 drivers in several scenes. Look closely and you’ll spot familiar faces like George Russell, Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc, and Lewis Hamilton.

Hamilton’s involvement goes far beyond a cameo. He also served as a producer and key advisor — offering insights on everything from car design and racing authenticity to stunt work and storytelling. His deep experience and creative input helped shape the film from the inside out, earning him the title of the film’s “driving force” among the crew.

F1 The Movie Was Filmed on a Real Grand Prix Circuit

It’s no wonder the racing scenes in F1 The Movie feel so authentic, the production was filmed on real Formula 1 tracks. The primary location was Hungary’s Hungaroring, a legendary circuit that first hosted a Grand Prix in 1986 and holds the distinction of being the first F1 track in Eastern Europe.

Known for its narrow, winding layout, Hungaroring places a premium on driver skill rather than raw engine power. Its natural bowl-like shape and elevated grandstands also made it an ideal setting for filming, allowing the crew to capture high-speed action from multiple angles with ease and intensity.

An Official Soundtrack Album to Match the Film’s Thrills

F1 The Movie goes all out not just with its story, action scenes, and stunning visuals, the soundtrack is just as impressive. Atlantic Records has released F1 The Album, a curated collection featuring tracks from world-renowned artists such as ROSÉ, Ed Sheeran, Don Toliver, Dom Dolla, Tate McRae, Burna Boy, Roddy Ricch, and RAYE.

Filming Amid Real Grand Prix Action for Unmatched Authenticity

To capture the true spirit of Formula 1, director Kosinski and his team took filming to the heart of the action, shooting key scenes live during actual Grand Prix races throughout the 2023-2024 season. Traveling to 14 iconic circuits including Silverstone, Spa, Monza, Zandvoort, Suzuka, Mexico City, Las Vegas, and Abu Dhabi, the crew worked within tight windows of just minutes between sessions. Despite the challenges, the result is breathtaking footage that brings the race day atmosphere vividly to life.

Custom-Built Race Cars Tailored for the Camera

The authenticity extended beyond locations. Six specially modified race cars were crafted in partnership with Mercedes and Carlin Motorsport. Built on Formula 2 chassis, these APXGP cars were reengineered with extended wheelbases, redesigned bodywork, and enhanced safety features. This blend of performance and protection allowed stunt drivers and actors to deliver thrilling, realistic race sequences without compromise.

F1 The Movie is a testament to the passion and precision of everyone involved. Every frame reflects a dedication to detail that elevates this blockbuster beyond typical action fare. If you haven’t experienced it yet, tickets are now available nationwide, get ready for the ride of a lifetime.
